Back in February, Google announced that they were going to use mobile friendliness as a ranking factor for websites: Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Basically this means that if your site is not mobile friendly you are going to lose traffic. By mobile friendly Google just means that your content is optimized so that it ...
An Edible and Very Delicious Camera Cake
The cake my wife got me for my birthday: It's all edible including the camera body, lens, and even the book covers (I think these were made with some type of edible ink). ...
A Lightroom plugin for verifying images with hashes
For the past two months, I've been working on a plug-in to verify image files in Lightroom. The plugin works by computing a hash for each file which can be thought of as a digital fingerprint. As long as the image is unchanged (i.e., the file is still ok) the hash value will also remain the same. If the image file becomes damaged or corrupted, the fingerprint will change and plugin can identify this by comparing the hash to a previously stored value. The plugin is now available as a beta and you learn ...
Christmas Rat Photograph in BrownTrout Calendar
I just found out that my photograph of my pet rat Salty was used for the 2011 rat calendar published by BrownTrout. My wife discovered this by accident as she was looking for a rat calendar and noticed that Mr. December looked awfully familiar. I didn't know about this use of the picture because it was licensed through Alamy, a stock photo distributor, as they are often very slow to record sales and notify their photographers. Salty is a male dumbo fancy rat. Fancy refers to rats that are bred to be pets ...
Lightroom 3 Lens Correction
On Adobe's blog, they just posted that Lightroom 3 and Adobe camera raw are going to have lens correction. I repeat, LR3 and camera raw is going to get lens correction. This is going to be a huge benefit for my workflow process. Up to this point, I've been using another raw converter, DxO Optics Pro, to correct distortion in my architectural images. While DxO does a fantastic job of correcting problems, I absolutely hate the program because the interface is terrible, it has an obnoxious copy protection ...

Bhutan picture gallery now up
This past fall, I went to Bhutan for a two week trip and took several thousand pictures. I finally finished processing the images and I just put up a gallery of my Bhutan pictures. The major locations I visited included Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, Phobjikha valley, and Wangdue Phodrang. I can say that Bhutan is an awesome country to visit for photography. The small Buddhist country is steeped in tradition and I had no shortage of subjects with all of the religious festivals and sights. It took me a little ...
Welcome
Welcome to my blog. I've been meaning to start one on my site for a while now but didn't get a chance until this Labor day weekend to really move forward on this. I'm using Wordpress and the installation was surprisingly easy, just fill out a web form and press a few buttons. I spent much more time thinking about the design and layout. So far, I'm very impressed with Wordpress and Thesis (the theme I'm using). I have a number of articles and equipment reviews in the tech section on BayImages.net and I'm ...
