I normally think about photography in terms of making pictures, where one carefully plans out the composition and light, but sometimes you just get lucky and a photo just appears in front of your camera. For this picture, I had setup on Santa Monica beach with the intention of photographing the pier and ferris wheel at night. This couple happened to be walking on the beach in front of my camera (I almost didn't notice them until it was too late) and I just snapped the picture before they left the ...
Last Night in Prague
I took this photo on my last night in Prague. Before visiting the city, I came up with a shooting list and I knew that I want to create some iconic images of Prague's bridges. I had already shot the Charles bridge but hadn't yet seen a good location where I could have multiple bridges in an image at once (there are 17 bridges in Prague that cross the Vltava river). ...
Baby Sea Turtle Struggles to Reach the Ocean
Went I went to Costa Rica, one of the events I was very lucky to witness was the hatching of baby sea turtles on Tortuguero Beach and watching them make the long crawl from their nest to the ocean. Tortuguero is the largest Atlantic nesting site of the endangered green turtle. Green sea turtles nest from July to October. The mother turtle will crawl up the beach during the night to dig a nest in the sand with her hind flippers. She will lay from 100-200 eggs which are each about the size of a golf ball. ...
Happy Cow
This previous weekend, I was at Point Reyes shooting as part of a Hasselblad workshop where I was able to use the new H4D camera. This camera is literally a beast weighing 5 to 10 lbs, depending on the lens you have mounted, and accepts a variety of digital backs ranging from 40-60 MP. (fyi the camera costs more than my car.) For one of our morning shoots, we had selected a point by Historic E Ranch where we could catch the sunlight hitting the coastal coves. After I had shot the sunrise, I was looking ...
Bryce Canyon National Park Landscape
Bryce Canyon is one of my favorite locations in the southwest. The alien landscape with rows of hoodoos (thin spires of rock with variable thickness) never fails to amaze me. I grew up in Ontario, Canada and there is nothing even remotely similar to the unusual rockforms in Bryce. Taking this picture was relatively easy and the primarily skill involved was patience in terms of waiting for the sun to set. Basically, Show up before sunset at Bryce Point and walk along the rim to find a position that ...
