Costa Rica is a democratic republic and it is one of the most stable countries in Latin America. It has no standing army and its 4 million citizens enjoy a relatively high standard of living.
In Costa Rica tourism, especially adventure and eco-tourism, is a major industry and the country attracts over 1 million foreign visitors a year. Costa Rica is extremely rich in biodiversity and over 25% of the land area is protected forests and reserves. Popular destinations include Tortuguero which is an important nesting site for the atlantic green sea turtle, the Monteverde Cloud Forest, and the Arenal volcano.
