Although Kowloon Walled City Park is now a beautifully landscaped park in New Kowloon, it started life as a Chinese fort constructed in the mid-1800s. Because of a legal oversight, the area remained under Chinese control during the British lease of the New Territories and was largely unpoliced. After World War II, the area became a crime ridden ghetto called the walled city and housed many triads, drug dealers, and opium addicts. In 1992, the city was leveled and replaced by the park. Today only the remnants of the South Gate remain.
