The earliest Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) in Mesa Verde lived in pithouses on the mesa tops from around 550AD to 700AD. A pithouse is a simple structure that consists of a living room, where the floor is few feet below the surrounding ground level, and a roof supported by timbers.
