Photos of the Washington Monument. The Washington Monument is a large white obelisk in the National Mall that stands 555 feet 5 1/8 inches tall and is made from marble and granite. Because Washington D.C. contains many open spaces and lacks tall buildings the monument can be seen from 30 to 40 miles away in clear viewing conditions. The monument is a Presidential memorial dedicated to George Washington, the first president of the United States and opened to the public in 1888
