Old Town Prague Photos

Old Town (Stare Mesto) is the heart of Prague and today is its center for culture and tourism. The maze-like streets offer a cornucopia of shops, bakeries, hotels, and restaurants. You can sample the traditional Czech pastry, trdelnik, or duck into a pub for a cold mug of Plzensky Prazdroj (Pilsner Urquell) which is the world's first Pilsner and pale lager beer.

Architecturally, Old Town is a wonder to behold. In the square you can see the Gothic Tyn Church, the Baroque St. Nicholas Church, and Old Town City Hall, with its amalgamation of styles.

Old Town has its origins in the 9th century, when a medieval marketplace sprang up on the banks of the Vltava River. This soon led to the development of guilds and businesses, and as people began to make their home there, it eventually became Old Town.
