Navajo Fortress is a red sandstone butte that sits at the juncture of Canyon del Muerto and Black Rock Canyon. The butte is historically important as it was used as a refuge against both Spanish and American military actions. The buttes steep sides made it impossible for enemies to attack and to reach the Navajo who remained in safety at the top.
