Cheri monastery, also known as Chagri Dorjeden Monastery, is located in the northern end of Thimphu Valley about 10 miles from the capital. The monastery sits on top of a steep mountain slope on the southern border of the Jigme Dorji National Park. Cheri monastery was established in 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and is the seat of the first monastic body in Bhutan.
