Watts is a residential neighborhood located in South Los Angeles with a large African American and Hispanic population. The most prominant landmark in Watts, is the Watts Towers, which were created by Simon Rodia. The towers are a spectacular work of art made by Simon Rodia from steel rebar, mortar, and recycled objects such as sea shells, bottles, broken glass, and other scraps. Rodia was an Italian immigrant and made the structures over 33 years (1921-1954) on his property with nothing but hand tools. After Rodia left, the property was eventually transfered to the City of Los Angeles and became officially designated as Watts Towers of Simon Rodia State Historic Park.
