Peru
Photos of Puerto Maldonado. Puerto Maldonado is a small city in the southeast of Peru near the border with Bolivia. It lies in the Madre de Dios Region which is almost entirely composed of Amazonian rainforest. The port serves as an access point for tourists who typically fly into Padre Aldamiz International Airport and then take boats to various lodges located on the Madre de Dios River, a tributary of the Amazon. The lodges provide access to the Tambopata reserve and lake Sandoval which are popular destinations. Other than tourism, the major industry in Puerto Maldonado is boat building, although the area previously supported logging, rubber collection, gold dredging, and Brazil nut harvesting.
