Cheonggyecheon is a stream that runs through downtown Seoul. The stream has been there since the Joseon Dysnasty, but following the Korean War, it became filled with trash and waste and was eventually covered with concrete and an elevated highway to contribute to Seoul's modernization and industrialization. Korean President Lee Myung-bak previously served as Mayor of Seoul. During that period, he began a campaign to remove the highway and restore the stream. The stream and surrounding recreation areas were intended to bring nature back to Seoul and to revitalize the economy by bringing shoppers to the area. The restoration was a tremendous success and the Cheonggye Stream area is filled with strolling people every day.
