Carnaval is a traditional pre-Lent festival that is normally held in February. It is a four day celebration that starts on Saturday and ends on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras). However, in San Francisco the weather in February is typically very wet and cold, and so the city celebrates Carnaval in May. The festival is multi-cultural orgy of music, dance, and food. The highlight is the Grand Parade which takes place in the Mission District and has been held annually since 1979.
